How To Get Radio Play As A Rapper Or Singer

Got Beats And Songs? One thing is for sure and that’s that radio is not entirely dead. It is still a great way for an independent musician to get their music heard by a huge number of people. Many radio stations only cater to a select few artists, and so many independent musicians it can still be hard to get heard. So how do you use radio to get yourself exposure as an independent rapper or singer?

Getting your songs and music with those hot r&b beats and rap beats for sale on the radio can be a hard task and there are entire companies dedicated to what’s called “radio tracking.” Tracking the amount of play you get, getting your music onto the actual radio and following up with those stations is what radio tracking is all about. But hiring these companies can be very expensive. It is a huge amount of work, even though it is totally possible to do it by yourself. The very first thing you need to do is make sure the music and songs on your rap beats and r&b beats for sale you chose are hit-worthy, radio style beats and songs. Making sure that your songs sound professional and are properly produced, mixed and mastered is also essential before radio stations will consider playing your music. Adding an un-mastered song to rotation is a big no-no by most stations standards. It’s also usually a good idea to get some professional physical CDs made in case the stations you send your music to don’t accept digital download links.

Creating a press kit is also something you’ll need to do. If you want to do this correctly, get yourself or your group a professionally written biography and some press photos. When sending out your press kits have a one sheet. A one sheet is a document that has a picture, your biography and some press quotes and album info. Also, if you’re sending an album, be sure to clearly point out the 2 or 3 best songs on the whole CD for people listening to focus on. Most people don’t like having to go through the entire CD so do not keep them guessing. Make their job easier for them. Making the package you send in stand out from everyone else’s is also important. There are lots of people that send in music to these radio stations. You want to be noticeable. Your next step is to research and write down all the different radio stations you want to send your music to.

This is important and it may seem like common sense, but you’d be surprised what up and coming rappers and singers do. Make sure you know who and where would best receive your CD and send it to them. Do not just send it out everywhere to anyone. Don’t send your CD to a radio station that won’t even fit your music. As a rapper, don’t send your CD to a country station. More commercial radio stations are hard to break into so they are probably not the best place to start. College radio is great for independent artists though because it is less controlled and more accepting to independent and underground rappers and singers. A good resource is called the “Indie Bible.” It is full of listings of places to send your music, including radio stations. Compile a list of stations and get ready to mail your CDs and email your digital links out to them. Whether it’s a specific DJ or the music director, make sure you find a specific person at the station to send your music to.

When sending your songs, rap beats and r&b beats for sale to radio stations, work in steps. Start locally, then go state or province wide, and then work nationally. A couple of weeks after you send out your music, follow-up with the person you sent it to. Remember not to be annoying and a pest. It is completely fine to get in touch after a couple weeks to remind them about your music in a friendly way. Don’t be fake, pushy or rude and you will go far. If the radio stations do end up adding you to rotation, keep them interested in you. Offer to record radio promos and drops. Also offer to do interviews or in-studio performances. Basically do everything you can to maximize your exposure on that station. You can still get some serious exposure on radio stations so work hard at it and it will pay off.
